National Feral Cat Day® is October 16!
Alley Cat Allies created National Feral Cat Day in 2001 as a call to action to raise awareness about community cats (also called feral or stray cats), promote Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and empower the millions of compassionate people around the United States who care about cats and kittens to drive change on their behalf.
National Feral Cat Day was launched at a time when municipalities and humane societies impounded and killed 70% of all cats who entered their doors and virtually 100% of feral cats. Thanks to the work of cat advocates and Alley Cat Allies’ leadership, things are changing, but there’s still more work to do!
Changing the World One Action at a Time
As a day of action, National Feral Cat Day has been a time for cat advocates, animal groups, veterinarians, and shelters to host activities or events, whether large or small, to help cats and kittens and inspire others to do the same.
Activities have ranged from spay-a-thons, TNR initiatives, and vaccination clinics to educational outreach, building outdoor cat shelters, and passing local TNR ordinances, to holding a bake sale that benefits cats or handing out community cat information in a neighborhood, and everything in between.
Over the years, thousands of activities and events have been held across the nation and around the world in honor of National Feral Cat Day® to protect and improve the lives of millions of community cats.
